In June 2022, the Tourism Bill in Bhutan underwent revisions by the Royal Government of Bhutan. One notable change is an increase in the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF), also known as a royalty. Previously set at US$65 per night per person, it has been raised to US$100 per night per person. This means that travellers will now be required to pay US$100 per night as SDF or royalty, in addition to the expenses for accommodations, transportation, guide fees, and meals as per the government-approved rates.

While some hotels and shops in Bhutan do accept credit cards, it’s a good idea to carry some cash as many places, especially in rural areas, do not accept cards.
